Biking and being Eco-friendly could be good for your Health

As we’ve been talking in class, Americans have less leisure time and more things to do in their free time. One thing that Americans are continually being told to do is exercise more often to remain healthy. Another thing is to have an ecofriendly commute. Luckily for Americans we can kill two birds with one stone and exercise our way to work and around town.

The Health Behavior News Service reported, “It may be more realistic to accumulate physical activity through active transport than adding exercise to weekly leisure-time routines.” The sixty to ninety minutes of daily physical activity recommended by researchers that University of Sydney School of Public Health is more time than most people can fit into their schedules. An advantage of biking, or even walking, to work is that it is easier to do than trying to find the free time to go to a fitness center. Everyone can make the time to get to work, but not everyone is willing to make the time to get his or her recommended dose of exercise.

  1. I really love not having to drive to school as I live on campus I just walk where I need to go, however I do not own a car so when I do go home (3 hours from here) I have to use some gas to get back. I really wish Lincoln had a small grocery store near campus or maybe downtown that is easily reachable by foot. When I lived in Japan, I walked at least 2 or more miles a day just walking to school, the train station, and to buy groceries. Everyone there walks or takes a bike and few people have a need to own a car in the bigger cities. I really loved not having to use a car and I hope the culture in the US can shift to this kind of perspective.

  2. I think this is a good idea to exercise to work. I wish more people would understand and participate in this concept.

  3. I work at the UNL bike shop and love to see so many people come in to get their bikes fixed in order to continue riding to and from school or work. Lincoln has an awesome set of bike trails that connect so much of the city which makes it easy and efficient to commute via bike. I know I sometimes find it hard to squeeze in going to the gym during my daily schedule so for people who really don't have any time to make that trip, biking is an excellent way to get exercise as well as helping the Earth!

  4. I really agree with the last statement. It makes sense that we should attempt to kill 2 birds with one stone. I mean, America is getting fat and destroying the earth by pollution. Seems like biking or even walking to work would be kind of a no brainer. I think people just need to realize these things and then find enough motivation to get out and do it!

  5. I really agree with this article because it is such a simple thing to do that benefits the doer and everyone else. I just wished I owned a bike. I've been thinking about getting one, I just have no clue where or what to get. It's a great idea that I will do eventually!

  6. I think this is such an awesome and easy thing to do. Biking or walking to where you need to go is not only good for you but for the environment too. I went to Texas with a friend for spring break and where she is from everything is super close to each other. Their neighborhoods are large enough that the school, grocery stores, restaurants, etc are all in the 'neighborhood'. The entire week I was there we walked and biked to every place we went, and it was so easy and didn't take that much extra time. When cities/neighborhoods are arranged like that there is really no excuse not to walk and bike. I think modeling more places off what my friends neighborhood was like could greatly increase the biking and walking craze.

  7. Who doesn't love riding a bike? This is a great idea and one I have been toying with when it gets warmer. I am slightly concerned about being hit by a car though...some people just don't pay attention. I have had a few friends hit by cars here.

  8. I agree! Going for a bike ride is such a great activity, more people should think about it in the way described. Why have to make time to excersize after work when you could just exercise on your way to and from work? Crazy! Lincoln has amzing bike trails and I wish more people used them.
